America's midterm elections, will determine a new direction?
This month is very important in the political history of America. The reason is that mid-term elections are being held on November 8, that is today, in which important posts including members of Congress and governors will be elected. In these elections, neither President Joe Biden nor his former Republican rival Donald Trump is on the ballot, but due to several reasons, the future of these two leaders is also connected with the results of these elections.
Why these elections have become more important for Pakistan and Pakistani Americans than in the past will also be mentioned, but first some basic mention of the nature of mid-term elections. In the world, everyone's attention is focused on the US presidential election, which is held every four years, but the freedom the president can legislate after half of his term depends on the same mid-term elections held every two years.
In the mid-term elections, the House of Representatives, which can be compared to the National Assembly of Pakistan, will be elected on all 435 seats, while one-third of the 100-member Senate, i.e. 35 seats, will be elected. This election is important for President Joe Biden's party, the Democrats, in the sense that the Democrats have 220 seats in the current House, while the rival Republicans have 212 seats. 3 seats were vacant. Thus, the split in the House at the moment is heavily dominated by Democrats.
As far as the Senate is concerned, the Republicans, former President Donald Trump's party, have 50 seats. 12 Democrats and 23 Republicans hold the Senate seats this time. The Democrats currently have only 48 seats in the Senate, but since 2 independent senators sided with the Democrats, the number of members of both parties has become equal.
Under the US Constitution, since the Vice President is also the head of the Senate, the Democrats took full advantage of this provision in these two years. There were 26 occasions when Vice President Kamala Harris cast her vote in favor of Democrats to help her party's priority bills become law.
Now, in either the House of Representatives or the Senate, in either case, it will be almost impossible for President Biden to legislate at will in his last two years and he will have to issue executive orders to run the job. The most important battles in the midterm elections are expected in the six states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Nevada, where many constituencies will be contested, these states will determine which party will tilt the balance of power. Also, what kind of attitudes should be adopted on the most important issues of the country, including economic policies, abortion rights, education, and control of environmental pollution.
Inflation is the biggest problem of the people in this election. It is likely that the Democrats will at least dig into their majority in the House of Representatives. In this case, the position of President Joe Biden will be weakened. They have already been ridiculed for their promiscuity. Vice President Kamala Harris is quietly watching the whole scene as she sees her own position strengthening as Biden's position weakens.
The midterms are also very important for Donald Trump. Donald Trump, who wants to become a candidate for the presidency again, has endorsed some candidates in this election that the Republicans do not like. If such figures are elected by the people, not only will Donald Trump's grip on the Republican Party be strong, but the possibility of Trump becoming a presidential candidate again will increase.
Compared to the past, this time Muslims, especially Pakistani Americans, are also taking a keen interest in these elections. Most of them are doctors or lawyers by profession, but the most important and historic fight is that of Dr. Asif Mehmood, who is a candidate for Congress from California.
Out of the 50 states in the United States, 36 governors will be elected, 27 of them are currently Republican while 23 are Democratic. If a Democrat governor is elected in a Republican state like Texas, it will also be an extraordinary victory for President Biden.
